What to do in January:
Get your potatoes and prepare them for planting in February. Plant cool season veggies such as: broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, lettuces, chards, and winter greens. Also plant onions, Asparagus, berries, fruit trees, and ornamental trees and shrubs. Plant cool season flowers such as: snapdragons, pansies, stock, calendula, alyssum, dianthus, and more. This is a great time to move plants in your landscape and also prepare your beds for spring planting using composts and other soil amendments. Spray dormant oil for over-wintering insects on your fruiting and ornamental trees and shrubs. January is a great time to prune fruit trees and deciduous trees and shrubs. It's bareroot season; save money and get an early start by planting bareroot fruit trees, pecan trees, and berry plants. Cut back any freeze damage on existing perrenials and ornamental grasses in your landscape now through February.
