Sweet Potato Slips
Sweet Potato Slips are finally here! If you’ve already got your space ready come on by and pick some up! If not, that’s okay, we are here to help. Did you know sweet potatoes can be grown in all 50 states? In fact, there are many farmers in central Texas that grow them as a largescale crop.
How to plant:
Sweet Potatoes prefer sandy loam soil that drains well. However, they are widely adaptable and will grow well if the soil is loose and drains well. Upon purchasing the slips, it is important to plant them in the late afternoon after the hot sun has gone. Rows should be spaced 3 feet apart and 12 inches high and the plants themselves should be spaced 10 – 18 inches apart. Place the roots well in the hole but be sure to leave the “bud” uncovered. Don’t forget to water them well once planted. Sweet potatoes are very hardy and if planted correctly they are a very easy to grow crop. If a large space is not available, they can also be done in raised beds or large planters just be sure to get a “bunching” variety which are great for small spaces.
Varieties:
Beauregard: An outstanding release that has been accepted by farmers everywhere. Red-skinned, large, elongated tubers that are deep orange inside. They mature in just 90-100 days.
Georgia Jet: Extremely fast growth with high yields this variety will not disappoint. Red skinned with orange flesh. Matures in 90 – 100 days.
“Bunch” Porto Rico: Favorite for gardeners with limited space. Excellent yields of baby bakers! Matures in 100 – 110 days.
Murasaki: Purple skin and white inside flesh. Murasaki is a Japanese variety with a unique flavor profile. Matures in 120 – 140 days.

What to do in May:
As we are hitting mid spring about now, it is time to get ready for summer! The more prepared you are the better success you will have. Here we have listed some of the most crucial tips for success.
- Harvest Garlic/Onions once stem falls over.
- Prepare space for sweet potato slips!
- Plant Perennial pollinators.
- Plant Pride of Barbados.
- Plant Herbs.
- Apply monthly granular fertilizer to vegetables. They are heavy feeders and need a steady supply of nutrients for them to produce well.
- Inspect ornamentals, vegetables, and lawns for harmful insects. Active insects to look out for include aphids, mealy bugs, beetles, grasshoppers, and caterpillars (be careful not to harm the good ones such as butterfly species!). Identifying and treatment early on helps prevent devastating damage before it is too late. It also helps by reducing the amount of pesticide needed to be used. Basically, it is better for your plants, your wallet, and the environment!
- Any container plants that are struggling to get full, prune back lightly and fertilize.
- Weed! The best way to control weeds is the hard way…Pull them up.
- Apply Humate to improve soil structure. By doing this you can create a soil structure that deters weed growth and helps reduce the chance of fungus in your lawn like brown patch.
- If you haven’t already, don’t forget to mulch everything you can!

From annual to perennials we have the color to make your flower beds BOOM! As color is seasonal it is best to plant either in Spring for late spring - early Fall color OR Fall for late Fall - early Spring color.

We carry fruit trees, shade trees, and ornamentals in manageable sizes typically 5 gallon to 15 gallon and sometimes 30 gallon however certain sizes and varieties can be limited to availibility.
Shrubs
Plenty of different types available. Shrubs are great for natural screenings, forming hedges, and they also make for great accents in the flowerbed. Mostly they are hardy evergreans that provide year-round greenery.
Houseplants
Our houseplant selection is constantly growing, we grow a lot of our own as well as bring in truckloads of foliage whenever we have the space. We also stock several rare and uncommon varieties.
